Santorini
is everywhere on Instagram. Every summer you see tons of instagram babes and
celebrities posting flawless pictures of Oia. They stay in fancy hotels, eat in
amazing restaurants and you think that you will be able to go there only when
you will be rich.
Let me tell
you something, you don’t have to be rich to visit Santorini. I’ve lived in London
and Paris and those places were more expensive than Santorini in my opinion.
The only things that are really expensive on the island are the fancy hotels
and the fancy restaurants (just like everywhere in the world). The activities
are maybe more expensive than on other Greek islands but it’s still okay and
you can make it work.
If you were
looking for tips like “how to stay in Oia for cheap” , then I’m sorry because
this article won’t satisfy you. But if you are like me and think that any place
can be traveled on a budget, keep on reading.
I flew to
Santorini last October and let me tell how amazing it was. I stayed 5 days and
I thought that I would share my experience with you.
On connait tous Santorini, enfin en photo. Chaque été on voit défiler des photos d’Oia sur instagram qui vendent du rêve et on se dit qu’on pourra y aller seulement quand on sera riche et célèbre.
Laissez-moi vous dire que vous pouvez y aller et pas besoin d’attendre l’ héritage de votre tante Martine. J’ai vécu à Londres et à Paris donc je sais ce que c’est les villes hors de prix.
Selon moi, ce qui côute vraiment cher, ce sont les hôtels à Oia avec vu sur la mer, pareil pour les restaurants. Si vous êtes prêt à voyager de manière plus modeste c’est vraiment faisable. L’île est sans doute plus chère que les autres îles du pays mais il y en a pour tous les budgets et pour tous les goûts.
Si vous êtes à la recherche d’un article de style « comment rester dans un hôtel de luxe à Santorini pour pas cher », je vais vous décevoir. Par contre si vous voulez juste passer un bon séjour et faire des trucs cool, l’article est pour vous.
Je suis allée à Santorini en octobre pendant cinq jours et c’était incroyable du début à la fin. Je vous donne mes petites recommandations et n’ hésitez pas à partager les vôtres si vous connaissez l’endroit.
How to fly
there: From Paris and other big European capitals, you can find some good deals,
especially if you book in advance. I flew with Aegean airlines and I think it
was probably the best company to fly with. But any flight company will do
considering it’s a short flight. If you are familiar with the blog, you know
that I’m a huge fan of flying during the low season. Flights and accommodation
are a lot cheaper. It tends to be less crowded too. However, I was surprised to
see that there were still a lot of tourists in October on the island.
Go on momondo.com to find cheap flights. I discovered this website a few months ago and I believe it’s cheaper than kayak.com etc since their commissions are smaller. But use a variety of websites and don’t forget to turn the private browsing on so that the prices do not go up later.
How long to stay: I think 5 days is perfect. A lot of people like to visit other Greek islands when they are in Greece. I made this mistake the first time I went to Greece. I wanted to see Athens and Rhodes and only had 4 days. So, I spent 3 days in Rhodes and one in Athens. I could not enjoy those places fully and lost a lot of time at the airport.
My recommendation is: if you only have a couple of days available and your budget is tight, pick one island only and explore it fully.

européennes vous trouverez des billets d’avion à prix abordables en basse
saison (autour de 200euros. Personnellement je ne paie jamais plus quand je
voyage en Europe en basse saison et que je réserve bien en avance).
Vous pensez sans doute que partir en Octobre c’est risqué mais
ça va. Il a plu une fois ou deux je crois mais c’était le matin et ca n’a pas
duré très longtemps. J’étais en robe pendant tout le séjour et j’ai pu me
baigner de nombreuses fois.
Allez sur momondo.fr pour trouver des billets à prix
compétitifs. J’ai découvert ce site il y a quelques mois, et je le trouve moins
cher que kayak.com et compagnie la plupart du temps. Mais faites vos recherches
et comparez les prix sur plusieurs sites. N’oubliez pas de passer en navigation
privée pour éviter que les prix augmentent.
Combien de temps y rester ?: Je suis restée 5 jours et je
pense que c’est une bonne durée pour explorer l’île. La plupart des gens aiment
visiter plusieurs îles en même temps. Si vous avez moins de 4 jours de
disponible, je vous conseille de vous concentrer sur une seule île. Santorini
est une île incroyable et je vous conseille d’y passer plusieurs jours. En
deux-trois jours vous ne verrez pas assez de choses (c’est mieux que rien si
vous n’avez pas beaucoup de temps). Et si votre budget est réduit, c’est mieux
de tout dépenser sur une seule île (ca vous fait économiser le transfert pour l’autre
île aussi)
Accommodation:
Oia is amazing, we all wish we could stay there but for most of us, it is not
affordable. Stay in Fira if you can. Fira is the capital of the island, so you
have everything there to plan your trip around. You can find hotels for 25euros
for 2 or backpackers around 14euros/night. Most places have pools but if they
don’t it’s all good. You have wonderful beaches and a lot of beach clubs with a
pool too.
The island
is very, very safe. And even if someone tries to still your stuff he/she won’t
go very far.
Le logement: Oia vend du rêve, et on aimerait tous pouvoir y habiter mais euh comment vous dire… c’est vraiment hors de prix. Je vous conseille de trouver un petit hôtel/auberge sur Fira. C’est le centre de l’île et il y a tout autour. Vous y trouverez des hotels à 25 euros pour deux ou des auberges autour de 14 euros/la nuit (je parle des prix en basse saison).
La plupart de ces endroits ont des piscines. Et même si vous
ne trouvez rien avec piscine, il y a de nombreux beach clubs avec piscine un
peu partout donc ne vous inquiétez pas (+ vous avez la plage).
L’île est super safe donc vraiment pas de danger, vous
pouvez choisir le coin qui vous plaît le plus.
How to
discover the island: The best way to visit Santorini is with a scooter. It’s
very nice! You can also rent a car and take the bus. The bus is at 1.80-2euros
on way and it goes everywhere. Another reason to stay in Fira, it’s a lot
easier to catch the bus and come back to your place easily.
Comment découvrir l’île: Après avoir testé tous les moyens de transport,
le scooter est le meilleur moyen de découvrir l’île, mais le bus est le plus
économique. Vous pouvez louer un scooter pour un jour ou deux pour aller dans
des coins où le bus ne va pas et le reste du temps prendre les transports en
commun. Le bus coûte 1.8-2euros (en fonction d’où vous allez). Tous les bus
partent de Fira (ça vous donne une autre raison d’y rester).
The food: I
absolutely love Greek food and it’s becoming my favorite cuisine. Everything is
tasty and feels like your mom made it. I only went to normal restaurants so
prices were decent. In Oia you pay for the view. A pastry would cost 3 euros
for a take away, but 7 euros if you eat inside. That’s a bit crazy but this is
how it works there.
I found
grocery shopping expensive in Fira but they have plenty of affordable bakeries
where you can eat typical Greek pastries but you have to be willing to go
outside of the popular places. You will find those bakeries close to small
villages and you can buy per kilo.
Pour la nourriture: J’adore la nourriture grècque et c’est en train de devenir ma cuisine préférée. Je pourrais me baigner dans du tzatziki sans problème. Je vous conseille d’aller dans des boulangeries qui se trouvent à l’extérieur du centre pour manger des trucs un peu plus typiques.
What to do
in Santorini?:
The best
things in life are free right ?! You have many wonderful beaches in Santorini.
From the Black beach, to the Red one. They are all mind blowing. Take time to
explore your surroundings.
I was
disappointed by the black beach at first but once I took the time to look
around, it became wonderful. It’s dark but once you look closer you see plenty
of colors around you.
The red
beach is incredible. You will have to hike a little bit to access the beach so
wear proper shoes and don’t go there with flip flops (don’t be like me).
The White
beach is accessible only by boat once you are on the Red beach. Every 10 mins
or so a boat comes and asks you for a ride. I didn’t take it so I can’t tell
how much it is but it should not be expensive.
Que faire à Santorini:Vous avez de très nombreuses plages. Elles sont toutes
splendides.
Au début j’aimais pas la Black Beach mais quand on prend le
temps de regarder ce qu’il y a autour c’est vraiment incroyable.
La Red Beach est accessible en transport en commun mais je
vous conseille de porter des chaussures fermées si vous y aller. Vous avez une
petite randonnée à faire avant d’accéder à la plage (ne faites pas comme moi
avec mes tongues).
La White Beach est accessible uniquement en bateau. Il y a
une petite barque qui fait le transfert toutes les 10 mins environ.
When I was during my research, I found an article from one blogger saying that you should avoid cruises. I did a boat cruise last year in Rhodes and loved it. I usually follow recommendations from other bloggers but this time I went against their recommendations and booked two boat trips.
The first
one was The Volcano boat tour. It lasts 7 hours. The cruising company picks you
up early in the morning and takes you to the boat. If your budget is really
tight do this one. I paid 40 euros and it was worth every penny. Everything was
wonderful and the guides friendly. We stopped on the Volcano island of Kameni.
The view you get from the island is incredible. I can’t believe I had the
chance to see that. However, don’t get your expectations too high when it comes
to the Volcano itself. You won’t see lava or anything like that. (You have to
add 2 euros for this activity.)
After that,
the next stop is the Hot Springs. You get a chance to swim in the sulfur water.
The sulfur contained in the water is supposed to smooth your skin but I didn’t
see a difference.
After the
dip, the boat gets you to Thirassia island, where you can swim and grab lunch.
You have plenty of restaurants on the beach and the view is insane, I repeat:
insane.
Quand je faisais mes recherches, je suis tombée sur le post d'un blogueur où il déconseillait de faire des tours en bateau. J’en ai fait
à Rhodes l’an dernier et j’avais adoré. Je me suis dit que j’allais me faire
mon propre avis et j’ai eu raison.
Mon premier tour était le volcano Tour. Ca dure 7 heures et la compagnie s'occupe de tout. On vient vous chercher et vous emmène au port. J’ai
payé 40 euros en réservant deux jours à l’avance. C’était incroyable avec un
bon rapport qualité prix .
La première étape se fait sur l’île volcanique de Kameni
(pensez à ramener 2euros pour avoir accès à l’île). Bon, ne vous attendez pas à
voir de la larve de partout mais la vue est incroyable.
Après ça, le bateau s’arrête aux sources d’eau chaude et
vous pouvez nager pendant 30 mins. Pensez à porter des vieux maillots de bain.
Le souffre contenu dans l’eau est apparemment bon pour la peau mais ça abîme
les vêtements.
Le dernier stop se fait sur l’île de Thirassia. Pareil, c’est
magnifique et vous pouvez prendre votre lunch dans un des nombreux restaurants
se trouvant en bord de mer. C’était juste ouf…
Ces activités étaient juste incroyables mais vous avez d’autres choses à faire un peu moins chères :
Later in the week, I did the sunset cruise. This one was a lot more expensive but I wanted to do both so that I could share this experience on the blog. If you want a wonderful cruise and have a bit of money do this one. It was even better than the previous one. They first pick you up at your place, and take you to the boat. Everything is included in the price!
We stopped
at the Red beach to swim, then we moved on to the White beach, swam again while
the staff was making the barbecue with typical Greek food. We did a bit of
snorkeling but I sucked at it. I still need to learn how to breathe with my
mouth only (if you have tips on that please leave a comment below).
We went to
Oia for the sunset and it was both wonderful and splendid. I can’t recommend this
trip enough but I don’t think I need to try really hard to convince you to
spend your afternoon on a catamaran.
Un peu plus tard dans la semaine, j’ai fait une autre
croisière en bateau (un peu plus luxueuse au prix de 140euros), mais si vous ne devez en faire qu’un
et que vous pouvez vous le permettre, faites celui là.
C’était incroyable de A à Z. Il y a un buffet/barbecue grec
inclut dans le prix. Le bateau s’arrête un peu partout (Black Beach, Red Beach
et à Oia pour le coucher de soleil).
Vous allez faire du snorkeling, nagez un peu partout et
attendre le coucher de soleil à Oia…
Those
activities were incredible but you can do other free things too:
Go to Oia,
explore the village and wait for the sunset. I feel like everyone knows about
the magical sunsets in Oia so expect the crowd.
You can grab one of the typical Greek pastries and eat it outside (it’s cheaper).
Allez à Oia et attendez le coucher du soleil. Par contre, il
faut y aller vrament, vraiment tôt. C’est blindé de touristes. Il y a pas mal
de restaurants, vous pouvez prendre une petite patisserie et la manger dehors en
attendant le coucher de soleil (bien moins cher que sur place).
Visit the
Akrotiri museum and don’t forget your student card (it’s free).
Rendez-vous à l’Akrotiri museum et si vous êtes étudiant,
ramenez votre carte c’est gratuit.
Keep in
mind that Santorini is a lot more than Fira and Oia. Explore the small
villages, you can’t get lost on this island.
Santorini ce n’est pas que Fira et Oia, perdez vous dans les villages. Vous ne pouvez pas vous perdre à Santorini de toute façon. Vous tombez sur des trucs toujours plus beaux. Je vous souhaite vraiment de voir ce que moi j’ai vu !
